The ALQ-213 electronic warfare management system (EWMS) is a key self-protective component on increasing numbers of aircraft. The system – which integrates and controls a wide variety of equipment, including warning systems, jammers, countermeasures dispensers, and missile warning systems – will be produced in steady numbers over the next several years for numerous aircraft applications.
In recent years, production of the ALQ-213 has been revitalized by its selection to equip the U.S. Navy’s P-8A Poseidon multimission maritime aircraft. The P-8A will likely experience steady sales worldwide as navies seek to replace their aging P-3s.
The United States is the largest user of the P-8A, with a requirement for 117 of the aircraft. Australia and India have selected the aircraft to meet their own maritime patrol requirements, with orders for 14 and eight, respectively. As a component of a vital and widely used aircraft that is already filled with advanced electronics, the ALQ-213 performs a key role in protecting the aircraft.
Going forward, the ALQ-213 will be installed on still more military aircraft worldwide. In January 2015, ALQ-213 prime contractor Terma was contracted by the Royal Netherlands Air Force to integrate its Modular Aircraft Survivability Equipment (MASE) pod onto the Dutch Air Force’s NH90 helicopters. The MASE pod includes the ALQ-213.
In July 2015, the U.S. State Department approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Republic of Korea of the F-16 upgrade program and associated equipment, parts, and logistical support, for an estimated cost of $2.5 billion. The deal includes 150 ALQ-213 units.
In January 2017, an upgrade commenced on the Taiwan Air Force’s fleet of 144 F-16 multirole fighter jets. The retrofit effort, referred to as “Phoenix Rising Project,” will bring the legacy Taiwanese fleet of F-16A and B variants up to a single enhanced ‘V’ variant. The upgrade program will see each of the aircraft equipped with the ALQ-213.
