Steam turbines have been the cornerstone of electrical power production since the late 19th century. Found to be more efficient than reciprocating engines, the steam turbine helped usher in a modern age. Utilizing steam gives the turbine flexibility in the fuel used to produce that steam. Anything that can burn is basically a candidate; however, lately the fuels themselves have become questionable. General Electric to Dominate Industrial Power Market

According to FI’s Platinum Forecast System, GE has clearly moved into the dominant world position in the production of industrial & marine gas and steam turbines.  As shown in the pie chart, GE Energy, with plants in Cincinnati (Ohio), Erie (Pennsylvania), Schenectady (New York), and Atlanta (Georgia), will capture 33.76 percent of the world market, valued at over $113.6 billion, during the 2017-2031 period.  In addition, subsidiaries in France, Italy, and Japan will contribute about 3 percent of production, bringing the overall share of GE up to almost 37 percent of the world market.   Continue reading

Natural gas has long been used for energy production, and its popularity is on the rise. Not necessarily a cheap option, it is the cleanest fossil fuel and its combustion generally results in less pollution. More efficient gas-fired power plants help lower emissions while increasing output, a proverbial win-win. This year has seen combined-cycle efficiency records broken not once but twice, a telling sign of future trends. General Electric is currently the record holder with an impressive efficiency rating of over 62 percent; however, it was Siemens who previously led the pack.[i] Continue reading
