Gogo recently announced that its AVANCE L5 has been selected for installation on Falcon and Embraer airframes. The AVANCE L5 offers live streaming video and audio, on-demand movies, and use of personal smartphones. Dassault will offer the technology on new-production Falcon 2000S, 2000LXS, 900LX, 5X, 7X, and 8X airframes. AVANCE L5 will also be available for installation at Dassault-owned service centers. The value of this production is estimated at $22.2 billion in constant 2017 U.S. dollars. Five hundred years of naval history ended in late September when the world’s last armored, gun-armed cruiser was decommissioned by the Peruvian Navy. The Navy’s long-time flagship BAP (Buque Armada Peruana) Almirante Grau lowered her flag for the last time after 45 years of service. With her departure, the world’s last warship designed primarily as a platform for her guns is gone and a line of development stretching back to the 15th century has ended. The BAP Almirante Grau was replaced as fleet flagship by BAP Montero, a Carvajal class frigate built by Servicios Industriales de la Marina (SIMA) and commissioned into the Navy in 1984. CTT Systems recently received an order from Eurowings to retrofit its Zonal Drying System on 25 A319 aircraft. The retrofit’s big draw is that it reduces an aircraft’s weight by preventing water accumulation in the fuselage. The weight of just one B737/A320 can be reduced by up to 200-300 kilograms. Can MAN, a company that is no stranger to power generation, outshine its rivals and break into a massive, competitive market? As far as gas turbines are concerned, MAN has not really had a big piece of the pie; however, that might shift somewhat in the coming decade. A new product, developed in-house by MAN, has been doing rather well for a new design and will perhaps gain the manufacturer some traction in the power generation/mechanical drive market.

Russia and Kyrgyzstan are discussing the possible establishment of another Russian military base in Kyrgyzstan, amid a renewed Russian emphasis on the security environment in Central Asia. The Russian military currently operates a military air base at Kant, near the capital, Bishkek, and the two sides are considering a second that would be located in southern Kyrgyzstan. Airbus Struggling with A320neo as PurePower Delays Persist

Boeing and Airbus delivered 202 (78+66+58) and 148 (55+46+47) commercial jets in Q3 2017, respectively, compared to 188 and 164 during the same quarter last year. This year to date, Boeing has delivered 554 jets (563 at this time last year), while Airbus has delivered 454 (462 in 2016). In 2016, Boeing delivered 748 jets (762 in 2015) in line with company expectations, while Airbus surpassed its delivery target of 650 jets by handing over 688 jets during 2016 (635 in 2015). Commander of U.S. Naval Air Forces Vice Adm. Mike Shoemaker spoke about naval aircraft readiness at the 61st annual Tailhook Convention in Reno, Nevada, in September. He stated that international commitments and budget constraints are making it difficult to meet aviation readiness standards. He added, however, that the FY17 U.S. defense budget has $1 billion earmarked for naval aviation readiness – part of a slow push in the right direction. Continue reading
President Trump and congressional leaders reached an agreement that will keep the U.S. government operating at FY17 funding levels through mid-December. The continuing resolution (CR), part of a broader legislative package that also included a three-month increase to the debt ceiling and nearly $8 billion in hurricane relief funding, was signed into law on September 8. Republicans had been pushing for a longer extension to the debt ceiling, but the agreement sets up critical votes on both the budget and the debt ceiling in December. Continue reading
