Steam turbines have been the cornerstone of electrical power production since the late 19th century. Found to be more efficient than reciprocating engines, the steam turbine helped usher in a modern age. Utilizing steam gives the turbine flexibility in the fuel used to produce that steam. Anything that can burn is basically a candidate; however, lately the fuels themselves have become questionable. Countries around the world have been struggling to mitigate the burning of potentially eco-unfriendly fuels to create energy. So what is to become of the highly efficient steam turbine? Forecast International Predicts $4.15 Trillion Large Jetliner Market Over 15 Years

According to projections from Forecast International’s Platinum Forecast System® 3.1, a total of 26,210 large commercial jetliners will be produced in the 15-year period from 2017 through 2031.  The value of this production is estimated at $4.15 trillion in constant 2017 U.S. dollars. Airbus Orders Picking Up Pace as Boeing Delivers First 737 MAX

On May 16, 2017, Boeing delivered its newest narrowbody jet, the 737 MAX 8, to Malaysia-based Malindo Air (Batik Air Malaysia), which will be the first customer to put the MAX into commercial service.

Boeing and Airbus delivered 56 and 60 commercial jets in May 2017, respectively, compared to 71 and 57 during the same month last year. This year to date, Boeing has delivered 277 jets (301 at the same time last year), while Airbus has delivered 242 jets (234 in 2016). In 2016, Boeing delivered 748 jets (762 in 2015), in line with company expectations, while Airbus surpassed its delivery target of 650 jets by handing over 688 jets during 2016 (635 in 2015). Airbus, Boeing April 2017 Aircraft Orders and Deliveries Disappoint

Both Orders and Deliveries Disappoint as Boeing Debuts 737 MAX 9

On April 13, 2017, Boeing’s 737 MAX 9 narrowbody jet made its first flight. Deliveries are expected to commence in 2018. Boeing is also considering a larger 737 MAX 10 variant to take on the Airbus A321neo, which has been outselling the 737 MAX 9.

Boeing and Airbus delivered 52 and 46 commercial jets in April 2017, respectively, compared to 54 and 52 during the same month last year. This year to date, Boeing has delivered 221 jets (vs. 230 at this point last year), while Airbus has delivered 182 (177 in 2016). In 2016, Boeing delivered 748 jets (762 in 2015), in line with company expectations, while Airbus surpassed its delivery target of 650 jets by handing over 688 jets during 2016 (635 in 2015). Boeing and Airbus delivered 74 and 62 commercial jets in March 2017, respectively, compared to 71 and 57 during the same month last year. Year to date, Boeing has delivered 169 jets (176 by the same time last year), while Airbus has delivered 136 jets (125 in 2016). January is traditionally a very slow month for both shipments and new orders. Airbus in particular delivers very few aircraft during the first month of the year. Bell Helicopter plans to terminate production of the 206L4 LongRanger during the first half of 2017, according to a report by Flight International.

Today, more and more nations are using highly advanced diesel-electric submarines that are extremely difficult to detect. And, the U.S. Navy has been forced to rely once again on its Surveillance Towed Array Sensor System (SURTASS) – not seen in priority use since the height of the Cold War. This sonar system is considered essential to America’s efforts to detect newer and quieter diesel-electric submarines, especially those operating in the littoral environment. Continue reading
